This week’s Tamil releases include –

Mupparimanam

Mupparimanam, starring Shanthanu Bhagyaraj and Srushti Dange, is all set to release this Friday. Touted as a romantic-thriller, the film is helmed by Adhiroopan. The supporting cast includes Skanda Ashok, Ravi Prakash, and Thambi Ramiah. According to a Deccan Chronicle report, it is based on a real-life story and was one of Shrushti Dange’s toughest roles yet. According to the report, it took her months to come out of character after shooting was complete.

The film’s music has been composed by GV Prakash Kumar. According to reports, there is a special party track featuring 27 popular actors from the Tamil film industry. Two versions of the song have been shot, one for promotional activities and the other for the film.

Kuttram 23

The medical drama Kuttram 23, starring Arun Vijay and Mahima Nambiar, has finally found a release slot this weekend. Arun Vijay, who plays a cop, told Silverscreen, “To me, a cop role for any actor in Tamil cinema takes him to the next level. My role as Vetrimaran in Kuttram 23 has been planned out well. He is clear, to-the-point, and I get a positive vibe from him. He doesn’t try to do things for the sake of attitude.” His rough-and-tough look has garnered praise from his followers, and the film’s trailer has kept Twitter busy. The 40-year-old actor first found his footing with a negative role in Ajit’s Yennai Arindhal

Kuttram 23 has music composed by Vishal Chandrasekhar, and is co-produced by Inder Kumar and Arun Vijay.

Yakkai

Yakkai, starring Krishna and Swathi Reddy, was earlier slated for a Pongal release in 2017. Due to delays, it is now releasing this weekend. The film is directed by Kuzhandhai Velappan and will feature Guru Somasundaram in a negative role. Guru was last seen playing the main lead in the blockbuster Joker. Meanwhile, versatile actor Prakash Raj also has an important role in Yakkai.

The film has music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and is bankrolled by Muthukumaran for Prim Pictures banner.

This week’s Malayalam releases include:

Oru Mexican Aparatha

Based on the golden era of campus politics, Oru Mexican Aparatha with its ensemble cast is the next big thing after Lal Jose’s Classmates in 2009. The film’s teaser on YouTube has been widely watched since its launch in the first week of February, with the teaser nearly crossing a million views in the first 48 hours of its release.

The Tom Ematty directorial will see actors like Tovino Thomas, Neeraj Madhav, Roopesh Peethambaran, Gayathri Suresh and Sunil Sukhada in equally pivotal roles.

Tovino Thomas, who received rave reviews for his performance in the horror-thiller Ezra, will play a dual role in the movie. Speaking with The New Indian Express, the 28-year-old actor said that playing a student leader in the ’80s has been a challenge. However, Tovino said he found inspiration in Kamal Hassan, who had played four characters with ease in the classic Michael Madana Kamarajan

Tovino recently clarified on Facebook that people who were expecting violence and bloodshed in the name of campus politics would be disappointed. He said that the movie is about friendship and love.

Oru Mexican Aparatha has been produced by director Anoop Kannan under the banner Anoop Kannan Stories.

Angamaly Diaries

Director Lijo Jose Pelliserry’s next film Angamaly Diaries reportedly has a record number of newcomers in the cast – as many as 86. The trailer, launched on 23 January, displays no actors in its credits. The screenplay has been written by actor Chemban Vinod himself.

When asked why the movie features so many newcomers, director Lijo told The New Indian Express that the movie is about the lives of people in and around the town of Angamaly in Kerala, and does not have a central lead. He said, “In Angamaly Diaries, the hero is the story, and not the people. There is no such person as a lead actor or actress and the story is all about the people of Angamaly and their lives.” Debutant actor Anthony Verghese’s performance has, however, gained fan attention thus far.

Lijo’s last film Double Barrel stood out for its quirky theme. The film, which had an ensemble cast featuring Prithviraj, Arya, Indrajith, Swathy Reddy, and Sunny Wayne among others, received mixed reviews at the box-office.
