From Popularity To Trolling – The Oru Adaar Love Team Has Seen It All

Little did Omar Lulu know while releasing a song from his movie Oru Adaar Love in February that his actress and her wink would go on to create the ripples they eventually did. The popularity of ‘Maanikya Malaraya Poovi’ spilt over internationally and even BBC covered the phenomenon. Recently, the Supreme Court cancelled a case filed by the Hyderabad Police against actress Priya Prakash Varrier for the song.

Seven months later, the makers have put out the third song titled ‘Freak Penne.’ In tune with the first video, this too has been witnessing an increasing number of views. The similarity, however, ends there. While the previous videos were appreciated for the melody and accompanying visuals, this one is facing the wrath of trolls for the same reasons.

From the generic visuals to pedestrian lyrics masquerading as rap, the song has been garnering a massive number of dislikes on YouTube. Detractors of lead actress Priya Prakash Warier and her instant rise to fame are also believed to be responsible for the backlash. An ardent believer of the saying “any publicity is good publicity”, the director showed up on a live chat and encouraged viewers to pour their hearts out in the comments section.

Lulu, who didn’t wish to miss an opportunity to cash in on the publicity surrounding his latest song, said he was taking things in the right ‘sportsman spirit’ – something unfamiliar to the Malayalam film industry that only recently witnessed the director of Mammootty-starrer Parole lashing out at online reviewers for trashing his movie.

‘Freak Penne’ is a classic case of pandering to viewers, and doles out what Lulu perceives to be things favoured by the youth, admittedly, the target audience for this movie – two fancy cars, a colourful background and a smattering of English words in the lyrics.

Lulu, however, has promised to not be fazed by the backlash. In the live video, he drew comparison between the lyrics and the future of his song, and plugged it at every possible chance.

Oru Adaar Love stars Priya Prakash Warrier, Roshan Abdul Rahoof and Noorin Shareef. Music has been composed by Shaan Rahman.
