AMMA To Meet With Women In Cinema Collective Members On August 7

The Association Of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has set a date for an emergency meeting to discuss the issue of actor Dileep’s re-instatement. The News Minute cited a source who said that a letter has been sent to the representatives of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) who had asked for the meeting.

The letter reportedly was not ‘conciliatory in nature’ and expressed disapproval at the way the WCC reacted to AMMA’s decision.

The meeting will take place on August 7 in Kochi. Actors Revathy, Padmapriya and Parvathy, who wrote to AMMA asking them to convene an emergency meeting, will have their say when they meet with the executive council members of AMMA. Parvathy, who was scheduled to go abroad, will reportedly postpone her trip so that she can attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Asha Achy Joseph, who is a member of the WCC, told Silverscreen, “We can’t really divulge details of the letter AMMA sent, unless they (AMMA) themselves reveal it and I don’t think it’s prudent to create a controversy out of it’s content. The point is to have a discussion between the two parties.”

The decision to reinstate Dileep was met with widespread criticism. The Kannada film industry, women artistes all over the country including Nandita Das, Renuka Shahane and prominent members of the Malayalam film industry took AMMA to task publicly for its decision.

Edavela Babu, Joint Secretary of AMMA, confirmed that a date had been set for the meeting. He refused to reveal details about it. “We will have a free and fair debate with the members who wrote to us. At this point, we cannot divulge more details. We will make an announcement in case of a development,” he said.

Recently, Mohanlal addressed the issue of Dileep’s re-instatement and said that the actor had decided against returning to AMMA.

The decision to revoke Dileep’s suspension was taken unanimously. The actor is an accused in the sexual assault and abduction of an actress. The Kerala Police had arrested him on July last year. He is out on bail right now. The trial on the case will begin soon.

Interestingly, the Tamil and Telugu film industries are yet to respond to the issue.
