Here’s our preview of this week’s releases: Sai Dhansika’s Enga Amma Rani and Dulquer Salman’s CIA.

Rani (Enga Amma Rani) :

Releasing: Friday, 5th May
Starring: Sai Dhansika

Sai Dhansika last played Rajinikanth’s feisty daughter in the 2016 film Kabali. Now she appears in a completely different role – as a single mother in Enga Amma Rani, which releases tomorrow.

Speaking to the New Indian Express, Sai Dhansika said the film was about a woman who lives away from her husband, and raises two daughters in Malaysia.

She also said it was director Samuthirakani who had first suggested the project to her. She said, “His assistant Bani is directing it. In fact, Bani hesitated to approach me with this role. But when I heard the script, I was overwhelmed by the climax; it was just so powerful.

I just knew I had to do the film.”

Directed by S Bani, the film has been bankrolled by C Muthukrishnan under the banner of MK Films. Ilaiyaraja has composed the music, and AL Ramesh has handled the editing.

CIA (Comrade In America) :

Releasing: Friday, 5th May
Starring: Dulquer Salman

Releasing on Karl Marx’s birthday is yet another Mollywood film set against a communist backdrop. Dulquer Salman’s next, Comrade in America (CIA), follows the trend of political films released in the first half of 2017, like Oru Mexican Aparaatha and Sakhavu. The film also stars Karthika Murali.

Directed by Amal Neerad, whose last film was Iyobinte Pusthakam in 2014, the film’s teaser gave us a glimpse of the lead character, played by Dulquer, a young lad hailing from Pala, who is a strong follower of communist ideologies.

While the director has mostly made movies in the action-drama genre, this time he adds a romantic twist to the tale.

Speaking to the Times of India about Dulquer’s role, Neerad said, “He’s a youth who has got Leftist leanings. Che Guevera is one of his heroes.” The movie has been largely shot in the US-Mexican border areas. Amal Neerad, however, says it’s not a political film and does not take sides. “It’s a coming-of-age tale. There’s nothing political about the movie. Also there aren’t any typical villain characters in the film either,” he said.
