Box Office Roundup: Decent Opening For ‘Raju Gari Gadhi 2’; ‘Judwaa 2’ Crosses Rs 200-Crore Mark

The past week witnessed two major releases, which turned out to be average films. Horror-comedy Raju Gari Gadhi 2, a sequel to the 2015 film, was out. The film’s release was timely considering the female lead of the film – Samantha Ruth Prabhu – got married and the film had her act alongside her father-in-law Nagarjuna Akkineni.

Malayalam release Kaattu, with lesser promotions and ads, is a better film, according to critics.

While there were no Tamil releases, there were two Hollywood films that people were equally looking forward to — Victoria and Abdul, and The Foreigner.

Here’s a look at the films’ performance at the box-office:

Raju Gari Gadhi 2

Directed by Ohmkar, the film stars Nagarjuna Akkineni, Samantha Akkineni, Seerat Kapoor in the lead roles with a special appearance from Kajal Aggarwal. The film is a sequel to the Telugu film that released in 2015.

On the day of its release, the film made Rs 8.60 crore. Trade reports suggest that the film fared well on Saturday, too, earning approximately Rs 6.50 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh states that the film earned $80,916 [Rs 52.36 lakhs] from 87 locations in the US.

Kaattu

The film opened to around 80 theatres in Kerala, with the first two shows going houseful. Directed by Arun Kumar Aravind, the film stars Asif Ali, Murali Gopy, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Manasa Radhakrishnan, Unny Rajan P Dev and others. It sets to explore short stories of veteran writer/filmmaker P Padmarajan, with a rustic setting tracing back to the 70s.

The film marks Varalaxmi’s second Malayalam film, after last year’s Kasaba. Music is by Deepak Dev, best known for his work in Urumi.

According to a Dekh News report, after the opening day, the movie has been running with 20 percent occupancy at the theatres. The box-office figures for this film is not available yet.

Victoria And Abdul

The film is a biographical comedy-drama film, directed by Stephen Frears and written by Lee Hall. The film is based on the book of same name by Shrabani Basu, and on the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her Indian Muslim servant Abdul Karim.

The film stars Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Eddie Izzard, Michael Gambon, Tim Pigott-Smith, and others. The film debuted at No.2 at the UK box-office, with the movie grossing $4.7 m in one weekend.

The film, however, hasn’t been doing too well in India. With critics slamming the film, the numbers aren’t out yet but it isn’t expected to be doing too well either.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film’s domestic earnings are $11,341,944 and its foreign earnings (including India) is $28,800,000. Thus far, worldwide, the film has made $40,141,944 at the box office.

The Foreigner

The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is based on the book The Chinaman by Stephen Leather, and is produced by Jackie Chan, Wayne Godfrey, and others, on a screenplay adapted from the book by David Marconi. The film is directed by Martin Campbell. The film is an action thriller revenge drama.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned $12,840,000 domestically. The film’s foreign earnings stands at $88,400,000 as of October 13. Worldwide, it has made $101,240,000 and ranks no.3.

Other Movies:

Judwaa 2, released on September 29, has surpassed the Rs 200-crore mark. Taran Adarsh states that the film last week made Rs 1.72 crore on Friday, Rs 2.65 crore on Saturday, and as of Sunday, a total of Rs 130.21 crore India. Worldwide, the film has made Rs 203.33 crores.
