A quick look at everything making news in cinema today:
After Mersal, music composer AR Rahman is collaborating with Vijay again for AR Murugadoss’s tentatively titled Vijay 62. Sun Pictures will be bankrolling the film. Vijay 62 is likely to star Keerthy Suresh as the female lead, marking her second collaboration with Vijay after Bairavaa . The film marks Vijay’s third collaboration with Murugadoss, after Thuppakki and Kaththi.
While Sun Pictures last bankrolled Shankar Shanmugham’s Enthiran in 2010, starring Rajinikanth, it has also distributed films such as Mankatha, and Vedi, the last being Kanchana 2.
Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, starring Suriya, Ramya Krishnan, Keerthy Suresh, and others, is all set for a big Pongal release. The film is directed by Vignesh Shivan, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The story is inspired from Akshay Kumar’s Special 26. The film premieres on January 11.

Offbeat
The Regional Censor Board has refused to grant a censor certificate to 21 Months of Hell, a 78-minute documentary that takes on the dark days of the Emergency in Kerala. The certificate was refused even after the filmmaker, Yadu Vijayakrishnan, agreed to cut out sections that had ‘violated’ the Cinematograph Act. The documentary will now be sent to a nine-member revising committee for review.

A song from Malayalam actress Parvathy’s film My Story is out. The film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and is directed by Roshni Dinaker. While the song, Pathungi, is quite fun, the video has over 58,000 dislikes on YouTube, thanks to fans who did not take Parvathy’s criticism of Mammootty too lightly. The actress has been at the receiving end of a lot of hate on social media ever since she criticised the film Kasaba, and spoke out against misogyny in films.
She even wrote about her experience on Scroll.
“If you say I am intolerant, then yes I am intolerant towards the depiction of women and people of diversity in cinema. I don’t want to sit and squirm in my seat watching such scenes. This is my film industry and I work here. Therefore I have every right to speak about this. If someone has a logical argument to make against mine, I am all ears. All I ask for is healthy discussion and debate,” she wrote, on the right kind of tolerance.
