Legendary Gameshow Host Bruce Forsyth Dies At 88

Legendary broadcaster Sir Bruce Forsyth is dead. He was 88.

The former Strictly Come Dancing host had been unwell for some time and was in hospital earlier this year after contracting a severe chest infection. 

A statement from his manager Ian Wilson said he died “peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Wilnelia and all his children”.

“A couple of weeks ago, a friend visited him and asked him what he had been doing these last 18 months. With a twinkle in his eye, he responded, ‘I’ve been very, very busy… being ill!'” he added.

Forsyth made his television debut at the age of 14. After years of hard work, he became one of Britain’s most recognisable faces with stints as host of game shows that dominated much of television in the 70s and 80s.

A direct descendant of William Forsyth, the founder of the Royal Horticultural Society, Bruce was motivated to join show business by his desire to buy his mother a fur coat.

An accomplished tap dancer, Forsyth’s career was revived when the opportunity to host Strictly Come Dancing, came about. The reality show went on to become a cult favourite, and made Forsyth popular with a whole new generation. 

The host is survived by is wife, Wilnelia and six children.
