A court in Jaipur has rejected a plea seeking a stay on the release of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. According to an IANS report, the plea was rejected on Saturday after the court found no merit in the case.
Jaipur-based filmmaker, Pratik Sharma, had brought a copyright infringement case against the makers of the Akshay Kumar-Bhumi Pednekar starrer, alleging that the makers had lifted the punchline and the subject from his film Gutrun Gutar Gun. The court, on July 26, asked the makers of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha to file a reply or enter into arguments in the case of copyright violation on July 31.
“We will study the judgement and then decide our future course of action,” said GD Bansal, the advocate for Sharma.
This isn’t the first time the makers of the upcoming Hindi film have found themselves embroiled in a copyright infringement case. Last month, documentary filmmaker Praveen Vyas sent a legal notice to the distribution company Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, alleging that several dialogues and moments in the film were directly lifted from his documentary, Manini. Manini had bagged the third prize at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year in Goa.

The makers received another notice from a Rajasthan-based filmmaker claiming that the song ‘Hans Mat Pagli‘ was a direct copy of one that appears in his own film. Vipin Tiwari, of Teetri Productions, said that his Rajasthani-language film Laadli has a song called ‘Hans Mat Pagli’. Vipin added that the film received a clearance from the CBFC, and the Indian Film and TV Production Council also recognises that he has a copyright over the song.
The movie, directed by Shree Narayan Singh, is scheduled to hit the screens on August 11.
