Dhawan plays ‘Mauiji’, an earnest guy sincere in his actions, but doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Dhawan brings to the character the energy that has come to be associated with most of his other roles. However, there’s more to Mauji than this energy. Mauji is a devoted husband and son; he is sincere in his job. “I ensure that I have fun in whatever I do,” says Mauji during the initial portions of the trailer.

He is taken for granted by his employer who makes him imitate a dog during a wedding so that the groom’s wife is entertained. “The boss is bound to have some fun when he’s the one paying you, right” is Mauji’s response about the incident when his wife asks.

Anushka Sharma’s Mamta is the responsible wife who is also a support system for her husband. She trusts in his skills and is the one who encourages him to start his own business. She might come across as a meek small town homemaker, but there is more to Mamta. She is an equal participant in her husband’s decisions and is seen directing Mauji at every step.

The later portions of the trailer portray Mauji’s journey as the typical one-man’s-struggle-against-all-odds to achieve his dream. With a background score that builds up momentum progressively, Dhawan is seen dusting an old sewing machine, marking out measurements on a piece of cloth, running errands for the business, working in a factory, engrossed in conversation with other employees – basically everything to suggest hard work.

One thing worth noting is Anushka Sharma’s consistent presence throughout these scenes. Even when Mauji is demoralized and demotivated by his family, Mamta remains as a pillar of support for him, also suggesting that Sharma has a meaty role in the film.

The trailer also reminds one of the government’s Make In India initiative and its promotion of small-scale businesses. The movie releases on 28 September.
