Karan Johar took time off his hosting duties at the IIFA, to address the nepotism debate. Actress Kangana Ranaut had earlier called Johar the ‘flag-bearer of nepotism’ on season 5 of his television show, Koffee With Karan. The remarks divided the industry, with star kids like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan denying that their privilege had anything to do with their film careers.
At the IIFA, Varun Dhawan joined hosts Johar And Saif Ali Khan onstage at the Metlife Stadium, to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role award for Dishoom.
Saif ‘joked’ that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father, director David Dhawan.
“You are here because of your pappa,” Saif said.
Varun replied: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).”
Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my pappa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”
They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks”.
