Directed by Reema Kagti, the movie is set in 1946. Akshay Kumar plays hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. who wants to win the Olympic gold for an Independent India and not British India. The film is, however, not a biopic but a fictional story.

Singh’s role is that of one of the players from the Indian team who aspire to win the coveted medal. Apart from him, the film’s cast includes Gauhar Khan, Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, and Amit Sadh. The film is slated to release on August 15 this year.

The 38-year-old actor began his career with the Sanjay Dutt-starrer Pitaah in 2002. While he struggled for years, starring in small roles, he is best known for his performance in Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, and the ‘Murabba’ segment in Bombay Talkies. Apart from Gold, he also has Sudhir Mishra’s modern take on Devdas in the pipeline, titled Daas Dev.
