Bollywood Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s Twitter Account Suspended

Bollywood singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s Twitter account has been suspended after several users reported him for tweeting offensive comments at JNU student activist Shehla Rashid.

Abhijeet had previously retweeted a derogatory tweet about Rashid, adding:

In another tweet, he insulted a woman when she called him out for his incendiary tweets. He wrote, “You Ms Pak. Tell me your cage no? Will reach there…Will do the favourite pose.”

Shehla had criticised Paresh Rawal’s tweet about using writer Arundhati Roy as a human shield against stone pelters in Kashmir. The tweet led to several trolls tweeting abusively at her, as well as Abhijeet’s remarks. She then tweeted:

It is unclear if the decision taken by Twitter is temporary or permanent. Speaking to PTI News, the singer said, “Author Arundhati Roy and people supporting JNU were behind the suspension of his account. They are trying to block Paresh Rawal also. All Arundhati and JNU group behind this after Paresh Rawal and I tweeted against Arundhati for her anti- India stand.”

Abhijeet has a track record of posting abusive tweets against journalists and women. In July last year, he was arrested for offensive tweets about a female journalist. A police complaint was filed against him after a Twitter fight with Janta Ka Reporter’s editor-in-chief Rifat Jawaid and journalist Swati Chaturvedi. A vocal advocate of right-leaning opinions, he exchanged heated retorts with both journalists on social media. Abhijeet also used offensive language against Chaturvedi when she had objected to his description of the death of a Infosys employee in Chennai as “love jihad”.

Thus far, when asked if he plans on getting his Twitter account back, he said: “I (don’t) care a damn… entire nation is with me.”

Shehla, however, is glad that his account has been suspended.
