Rishi Kapoor has openly blamed director Anurag Basu for Jagga Jasoos‘ poor show at the box office, and called him an irresponsible director.
Speaking to Mid-Day, the actor said: “I didn’t hate or love the film, I only felt it needed to be abridged by 20 minutes. But, who is going to give that opinion to them? I totally agree with Ekta Kapoor when she threw him out of her film. He had problems with Rakesh Roshan while working on Kites. He’s such an irresponsible director that he doesn’t complete the film. It was supposed to release three times in the past two years…”
Rishi also came to the defence of his son Ranbir, the lead actor and one of the producers, stating how the director wasted Ranbir’s time and money. “Ranbir’s films do well, sometimes they don’t. But here, Ranbir is the producer too, and his neck is in the noose. Who the hell are you (Basu) to do all this? It is ridiculous that a producer hadn’t seen his product a day ahead of the film’s release. There’s somebody else’s money involved in this. He even threw Govinda out of the film. Iss Sab mein Ranbir ka naam kharaab hoga aur kya? Mera naam kharaab hoga!” he added.

Incidentally, Ranbir Kapoor, too, hinted at being upset with Basu. Speaking to AIB for a podcast before the film’s release, Ranbir admits it was a mistake teaming up with his Barfi! director. “Big mistake. First and last time. And (Anurag is the) wrong person to produce a film with, because you have no control. And, it just makes you feel useless because he is running everything. I can’t take credit for this film. I am very happy I produced this film. I don’t know much about my acting in the film. I don’t know if I am good or not but I am happy to have produced a film like this in India.”
Jagga Jasoos, made at a budget above Rs. 100 crore, released on July 14 after several postponements, and reportedly garnered only Rs 2 crore on day-nine at the box-office. The film collected an estimated Rs. 31.75 crore over its first-weekend and rounded up its first-week with an estimated collection of Rs 43.12 crore.
