RedditWhatsapp

The trailer of Aamir Khan’s Dangal, the movie that Karan Johar described as the best film of the decade, is out. And it is a clear winner! Glimpses of life in a north Indian village and power-packed wrestling sequences might remind one of Salman Khan’s Sultan. But Dangal seems to be very different from Sultan which revolved around a hero and his journey towards victory. Going by the 3.25 minute-long trailer, Dangal, in spite of Aamir Khan’s presence, belongs to the spirited girls who play his daughters.

The film, directed by Nitish Tiwari, narrates the extraordinary real-life story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler from Haryana, who trained his daughters to be wrestling champions. Geeta Phogat won India’s first ever gold medal in women’s wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and Babita Kumari won a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships.

Khan underwent a drastic makeover for the film. He gained 30 kg to essay the role of the aging wrestler and later, to play a younger role, he shed around 25 kg. Sakshi Tanwar plays his wife, Shobha Kaur, in the film. While Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar play Geeta  Phogat and Babita Kumari respectively, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra play their adult versions.

The film is written by Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Meharotra, and is produced by Aamir Khan and Siddharth Roy Kapur.
