Producer Karan Johar and Director Shaad Ali of OK Jaanu would have expected little trouble from the “Bapu” references in the movie. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has ordered the makers of the film to remove “light-hearted” references to Mahatma Gandhi from the movie.
As per a report in Deccan Chronicle, in the movie’s soundtrack, Bapu has been replaced by Babu and Sabarmati as Sabzi Mandi (vegetable market). References to Mahatma Gandhi’s charkha has also been striked out. The line “Charkha kar rahe the (was spinning the charkha)” is now “Chane kha rahe the (was eating channa).”
Khadi, the hand-woven fabric endorsed by Gandhi has also been removed.

A source close to the movie has said, “These were all light-hearted, bantering references, not in the least hurtful or offensive, let alone insulting to Gandhiji. Are we mad to insult the Father of the Nation?” CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani has maintained a firm stance on the issue. He said, “We’re very clear on this issue. No light-hearted references to any political figure. Phir Gandhiji toh Gandhiji hain.”
OK Jaanu, the Hindi language remake of Mani Ratnam’s OK Kanmani, will see Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor as the main leads and the movie is all set to hit the screens on 13th January 2017.
