Weekend Watch: Preview Of Noor, Maatr, & Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu

Here’s our preview of this week’s releases: Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor, Raveena Tandon’s Maatr, and Biju Menon’s Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu.

Noor:

Noor is the second movie, after last year’s Akira, in which actress Sonakshi Sinha plays the titular character. Noor is based on Pakistani author Saba Imitiaz’s comedy crime-thriller novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me! and has been directed by Sunhil Sippy.

While the novel was set in Karachi, the film has Noor, a Pakistani journalist, navigating her way through Mumbai. In an interview with The Hindu, Sonakshi said she enjoyed playing the girl-next-door Noor, and for once, didn’t have to doll up in front of the camera. On playing a journalist, Sonakshi said, “I learnt that it is a thankless job. It’s a very demanding profession; involves a lot of hard work and struggle.”

Noor ran into some trouble with CBFC as the board wanted the removal of the words ‘Dalit’ and ‘sex toy’.

The movie also stars Purab Kohli, Shibani Dandekar, and Kanan Gill in pivotal roles, and has been produced by Bhushan Kumar.

Maatr:

Maatr has made headlines firstly, for being Raveena Tandon’s comeback film, and secondly, for the issues it covers. The story revolves around a mother who is seeking revenge on those responsible for her daughter’s violent death. Reportedly, CBFC board members walked out of the film’s screening due to its graphic content.

Producer Anjum Rizwi had denied reports that the board had banned the movie from releasing. The movie was cleared after the makers submitted a revised version. Reacting to the CBFC’s response, Raveena had said, Maatr is a story that needs to be told….If this continues we will remain indifferent to brutality, and rape will remain a taboo.”

Maatr has been helmed by Ashtar Sayyed and is written by Micheal Pellico. The film also stars Madhur Mittal and Divya Jagdale in important roles.

Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu:

Malayalam actor Biju Menon’s next movie Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu also releases this Friday. The movie reportedly revolves around the day-to-day life of an irrigation department official, played by Biju Menon.

The film’s director Ranjan Pramod has written the script himself. The trailer is full of lighthearted humour with a range of characters in a rural setting, including the promising duo of Biju Menon–Aju Varghese. The crux of the movie seems to be the lead actor’s love for cricket, reminiscent of Nivin Paul’s film 1983

The movie also stars Aju Varghese, Deepak Parambol, Hareesh Perumanna, Janardhanan, Alencier Ley, Dileesh Pothan, and Hannah Reji in prominent roles.
