Similar to the opening shot of his video ‘Tanha Dil’, Shaan walked into the hearts of the listeners with his music. Singer, composer, lyricist, actor and television host, Shaan dons various hats. Unfortunately, playback singers in Bollywood come with limited shelf lives. Shaan’s case has been no different. The singer, who has hardly sung for a mainstream movie in the past couple of years, has himself admitted to witnessing dwindling offers.

Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe, Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Jointly sung by Shaan, K.K and Shankar Mahadevan, the popularity of the song can only be matched by that of the movie. Shot as a club number, the song stayed true to its purpose and became a party anthem. The team reunited for many more party numbers like ‘It’s the time to Disco’ from Kal Ho Naa Ho and ‘Where’s The Party Tonight’ from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.’
Main Aisa Kyun Hoon, Lakshya (2004)
The fate of this song bears heavy semblance to the movie which caught on with the audiences only through DVDs and television reruns. Teaming up with Shankar Ehsaan Loy and Javed Akhtar yet again, Shaan breathed life into this unconventional track which spoke about the existential crisis of a teenager. Choreographed by Prabhu Deva and performed by Hrithik Roshan, the song is a regular at dance competitions.
Chand Sifarish, Fanaa (2006)
Composed by Jatin Lalit, the song begins with a humming portion that etched Shaan’s voice into people’s memories forever. He won the year’s Filmfare best playback singer award. Lyrics were penned by Prasoon Joshi.
Jab Se Tere Naina, Saawariya (2007)
It won Shaan the Filmfare award for the second consecutive year. What distinguishes the song is the use of minimal instruments and simple rhythm which accentuated Shaan’s vocals. Composed by Monty Sharma and penned by Sameer, Sanjay Leela Bhansali shot the song on a towel-clad Ranbir Kapoor. The song hit the news because of a scene where Kapoor almost drops the towel.
Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om, Om Shanti Om (2007)
Composed by Vishal-Shekhar and penned by Javed Akhtar, the song is a synopsis of the entire story of the movie. Pictured flamboyantly, the song plays a major role in the movie as the moment of realization for the antagonist happens here. And Shaan’s powerful rendition contributes in this regard.
