Weekend Watch: Uriyadi 2, Kuppathu Raja, Majili and Mera Naam Shaji

Hiphop Tamizha Adhi and GV Prakash Kumar – two music composers-turned-actors have movie releases this week in the form of  Natpe Thunai and Kuppathu Raja. Uriyadi 2 and Oru Kadhai Sollattuma are the other two releases in Tamil. Malayalam and Hindi each have a release in Nadirshah’s Mera Naam Shaji and the John Abraham starrer Romeo Akbar Walter – RAW. In Telugu, Majili that marks Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Akkineni’s first movie post-marriage releases.

Natpe Thunai

Natpe Thunai features music composer-singer Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi in the lead. The movie has been produced by Sundar C, who had produced Adhi’s previous film Meesaya Murukku. Natpe Thunai, a sports comedy, has been directed by newcomer D Parthiban Desinghu and revolves around hockey. The film also features newcomer Anagha as  female lead. A song titled ‘Kerala Song’ has become a hit among listeners.

Kuppathu Raja

After his turn as a musician who seeks to learn the mridangam after breaking the class divide  in Rajeev Menon’s Sarvam Thaala Mayam, GV Prakash plays the boy in a hood in Kuppathu Raja. The movie, directed by cinematographer-turned-director Baba Bhaskar, derives its title from a 1978 Rajinikanth starrer and is touted to be an action-comedy-drama. While Palak Lalwani and Poonam Bajwa play the female leads, Parthiban and Yogi Babu also appear in prominent roles. GV Prakash has composed the music too.

 

Uriyadi 2

Written and directed by Vijay Kumar, Uriyadi 2 is the sequel to the 2016 political thriller and features him as protagonist Lenin Vijay. Uriyadi, set in Trichy of the 1990s, was about four college students who get embroiled in a political controversy because of a powerful man who wants to start a caste-based party. Vijay Kumar has reportedly said that the sequel is about how politicians use caste for their own gains. Newcomer Vismaya, Madras Central fame Sudhakar, Shankar Thas and Abbas play supporting roles.

 

Oru Kadhai Sollattuma

Oru Kadhai Sollattuma, starring Resul Pookutty in his acting debut, is about the Oscar-winning sound designer’s wish to capture the sounds of the Thrissur Pooram – an annual festival held at the Vadakkumnathan temple in Kerala that involves 60 elephants and more than a million people spread across 70 acres. The film has been close to two years in the making. The movie will release in Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.

 

Majili

Majili is Samantha Akkineni and Naga Chaitanya Akinneni’s fourth film together, and their first one post-marriage. The film features a second female lead in the form of Divyansha Kaushik. Majili has been directed by Shiva Nirvana, who had made his directorial debut with Ninnukori. Majili also features Rao Ramesh, Posani Krishna Murali and Subbaraju in supporting roles. Music is composed by Gopi Sundar. The movie reportedly has Samantha essaying dual roles.

Raw

RAW is an espionage action thriller featuring John Abraham as an undercover spy. The movie is a period drama set in 1971 and is  based on true events. Directed by Robbie Grewal, the movie features Mouni Roy, Jackie Shroff and Sikander Kher in supporting roles. According to reports, the movie was initially set to star Sushant Singh Rajput who had to opt out due to prior commitments.

Mera Naam Shaji

Mera Naam Shaji, actor Nadirshah’s third film as a director, stars Biju Menon, Asif Ali and Baiju. All three play characters named Shaji who hail from different parts of the State. While Baiju’s character belongs to Trivandrum, Asif Ali is from Kochi and Biju Menon is from Kozhikode. Biju Menon and Asif Ali’s collaboration raises expectations as the actors have previously worked together on successful movies such as Ordinary and Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. Nikhila Vimal plays the female lead in the film.
