Weekend Watch – Preview Of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

After weeks of controversies and speculations, SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will finally release on 28 April. The much-awaited sequel to the first installment is seeing a delayed release because of extensive post-production work, as well as release problems in Karnataka.

The film is a sequel to the highly successful Baahubali: The Beginning, and fans hope it will answer that one big question – “Why did Katappa kill Baahubali?”. Much is also expected from the film at the box-office, given that the first part of the series grossed a record-breaking Rs. 650 crores.

The lead cast has been retained from the first film, with all the cast members playing a pivotal role in the sequel. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will once again star Prabhas (playing a dual role), Rana Dagubatti, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyraj, Nasser, and Rohini.

The trailer released a month and a half ago.

The trailer takes us back to the kingdom of Maahishmati, which is in for a shock, as the son of the previous king Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) bears an uncanny resemblance to his murdered father. The trailer also gives us a glimpse of the romance blooming between Devasena (played by Anushka Shetty) and Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas).

Elsewhere, director SS Rajamouli has said that the script was retained for the second film, and not many changes were made. The biggest change were the elaborate action sequences. This decision was made following the raging success of the first part, and given how well the VFX and action scenes were received by viewers.

Earlier, the sequel ran into a number of controversies leading to such a delayed release. In fact, when the end credits for Baahubali: The Beginning rolled out, the second part was expected to release by the end of 2016. However, with the elaborate post-production work and the fallout over actor Sathyaraj (who plays Kattappa)’s pro-Tamil comments (made nine years ago), pro-Kannadiga outfits raised objections against the release of the movie in Karnataka. Sathyaraj subsequently issued an apology, in which he pointed out that 31 movies featuring him had already released in the state.

SS Rajamouli has also apologised for any hurt Kannada sentiments, and requested viewers to let the movie get a smooth release in the state. In his plea, he said, “The thousands of people who worked day and night on this film will. It is unfair that they should be penalised for Sathyaraj’s actions.”

In addition to directing Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, SS Rajamouli has also written the film’s screenplay. It has been bankrolled by Shobhu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under the banner of Arka Media works. The music for both the installments were composed by MM Keeravani. The editing has been done by Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao and Sabu Cyril has done the elaborate production design for both movies.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion will release in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, and several other international languages.
