Weekend Watch: Dev, Oru Adaar Love, June & Gully Boy

This week’s major Tamil release is the Karthi-starrer Dev. In Malayalam the releases are Oru Adaar Love and June, and Gully Boy in Bollywood. There are no major releases in Telugu and Kannada.

Dev

Directed by newcomer Rajath Ravishankar, Dev is an action, adventure, romantic-thriller starring Karthi and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead. Produced by Prince Pictures, music for Dev is by Harris Jayaraj. The film is said to be inspired by the life of Kapil Dev.

Prakash Raj, Ramya Krishnan, RJ Vignesh, Amrutha and other actors play pivotal roles. Cinematography is by R Velraj, and editing is by Anthony L Ruben. The film was shot in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Himalayas and Ukraine.

Speaking about Dev, Karthi said, “This is a love story, but it isn’t about romance. It is a film that speaks about loving everything around you. Live the moment, love, and do what your heart says, is what Dev is all about.”

Oru Adaar Love

Directed by Omar Lulu, the film is a romantic comedy produced by Ousepachan Vaalakuzhy under Ousepachan Movie House. It narrates the romance of two high school students, and stars Priya Prakash Warrier, the actor who became popular after a video of her wink went viral on the internet. Noorin Sherif plays the other lead. Music is by Shaan Rahman, and multiple lyricists have worked on the film.

June

Directed by debutant Ahamed Kabeer, June traces the life of a girl from her teens to 25 years. It is said to be a coming-of-age film, starring Rajisha Vijayan and Sarjano Khalid in the lead. The film is produced by Friday Film House, the producers of Angamaly Diaries and Aadu 2. Music is composed by Ifthi.

Talking about the film, the director told Times Of India, “June is the name of the central character, and it captures the perspective of a girl and her experiences. The way she sees the world, her family, how she wants her friends to be and eventually the phase of marriage, forms the story. It encapsulates family, love and friendship from a female perspective.”

Gully Boy

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy is inspired by real-life incidents and is based on the lives of the Mumbai based hip-hop artistes Divine and Naezy. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Raaz. It is produced by Zoya Akhtar’s Tiger Baby Productions, and Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Shidwani’s Excel Entertainment. It was recently selected for the 69th Berlin Film Festival scheduled to be held between February 7 and February 17.

Talking about the film, Ranveer told News 18, “It is the story which represents Mumbai in its true sense and the city is my home town, these are my people, this is my language so this is the story I am really attached to. It’s an underdog story about a kid who broke through from great adversity in life to make it as a recording artist.”
