Weekend Watch: 90 ML, Thirumanam, Thadam, Dha Dha 87, Sonchiriya and Luka Chuppi

This week’s major Tamil releases are Oviya’s 90 ML, Cheran’s Thirumanam, Arun Vijay’s Thadam and Chaaru Haasan’s Dha Dha 87. While in Bollywood it is Sonchiriya and Luka Chuppi. There is no major release in Malayalam and Telugu.

90 ML

Directed by Anita Udeep of Kulir 100 fame, the film 90 ml is an adult comedy drama starring Oviya in the lead. The film revolves around a group of five women and their desires in life. Said to be a women-centric, bold and entertaining, the film has music composed by Simbu, who will be seen playing a cameo in the film.

Simbu made his debut as a music director with Santhanam’s Sakka Podu Podu Raja. Oviya has recorded a song ‘Marana Matta’ along with Harish Kalyan for the film and the song talks about getting drunk on New Year’s Eve. Produced by Udeep under the banner Nviz Entertainment, cinematography for the film is  by Aravind Krishna, while the lyrics are by Mirchi Vijay.

Talking about the criticisms regarding the film’s trailer, Oviya said, “Of course, this is a culture shock for some people, as women are seen smoking and drinking in the trailer. But, the entire movie is not like this. It has all the elements of a movie, and what was seen in the trailer is just a part of the film. It is just a movie, and if you don’t have confidence in your culture, or if you are a male chauvinist, please don’t watch 90ML.”

Thirumanam

Thirumanam – Sila Thiruthangaludan is a family romantic drama directed by actor-director Cheran, who took a long break from the industry. The film stars debutants Umapathy Ramaiah and Kavya Suresh in the lead, while Cheran, Suganya, Thambi Ramaiah, M.S.Bhaskar, Jayaprakash, Manobala and Bala Saravanan plays pivotal roles.

The film is produced by Premnath Chidambaram under the banner Preniss International, who is debuting as producer with this project. The music for the film is composed by Siddharth Vipin, who previously worked with Cheran in JK Enum Nanbanin Vaazhkai, while the lyrics for the songs are by Yugabharathi, Lalithanand and Cheran. The cinematography for the film is by Rajesh Yadav of Chennai 600028 II-fame, and Ponnuvel Dhamodaran takes care of the editing.

Talking about the film during it’s audio launch, Cheran said, “The film reflects the life of common people and how money plays an important role and how shortage of it affects their life.”

Thadam

Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, Thadam starring Arun Vijay in the lead is an investigative crime thriller which revolves around a mysterious man who commits murders. The film stars Arun Vijay in dual roles, while it also features Tanya Hope, Smruthi Venkat and Vidya Pradeep in the lead roles. The film marks the second collaboration of Arun Vijay and Magizh Thirumeni after their action thriller Thadaiyara Thaakka, which released in 2012.

Produced by Inder Kumer, the film also has Yogi Babu, Soori, Sonia Aggarwal, Aadukalam Naren, FEFSI Vijayan and Meera Krishnan in pivotal roles. While the music for the film is composed by Harris Jayaraj, the cinematography is done by Sakthi Saravanan and editing done by SN Srikanth.

Dha Dha 87

Directed by debutant Vijay Sri G, Dha Dha 87 stars Charu Haasan and Saroja in the lead. It is an action romantic drama that claims to be a continuation of the 1988 film Sathya which starred Kamal Haasan in the lead role. If reports are to be believed Charu Haasan will be seen playing the older self of Kamal Haasan, while Keerthy Suresh’s grandmother will play Amala’s lead role from the original. Comedian Janagaraj who was part of Sathya will also be seen in an important role.

Three young stars who are making their Tamil debut with Dha Dha 87 will also be seen in the lead. Jeni Pallavi, Anu Lavanya, Anand Pandi, reportedly have important roles. The film was simultaneously dubbed in Hindi, and produced by Kalai Cinemas. Leander Lee Marty is the music composer.

Sonchiriya

It is an action film directed by Abhishek Chaubey, starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles. The film is set in the Chambal valley, and follows the story of a legion of dreaded, warring dacoits who once terrorised the Indian heartlands. It is produced by Ronnie Screwvala under the banner RSVP movies.

Cinematography for the film is by Anuj Rakesh Dhawan, while the music is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and backgrouund scored by Naren Chandvarkar and Bendict Taylor.

Luka Chuppi

Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film is a romantic comedy that stars Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in the lead. The film revolves around a television reporter in Mathura who falls in love with a headstrong woman. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner Maddock Films and Jio Cinema, the cinematography for the film is done by Milind Jog, while the music is composed by Tanishk Bagchi, Abhijit Vaghani and White Noise while the lyrics is by Kunal Verma, Nirmaan and Mellow D. It is said that all the songs in the film are remakes of popular songs, thus making it a remix album.
