From Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali To Jimikki Kammal, Here Are The Top Social Media Moments Of 2017

In 2017 celebrities were made on social media and new internet-breakers emerged while haters continued to hate. From funny jokes that lived and died, to several instances and stories that birthed LOL-worthy memes, here’s a look at some of social media’s best moments that truly make us appreciate the strange world of the interwebs.

Selfie Maine Le Li Aaj – Dhinchak Pooja

It was an unsuspecting day, a rather lazy one with the onset of summers in India. We thought we had all seen the best of ‘Dhinchak’ Pooja, a young and rather vibrant girl whose name came to be associated with what is called ‘cringe pop’. Some called her India’s answer to Pakistan’s Taher Shah. When she burst into the scene in 2015, few had heard of her and by 2016 we got accustomed to her style. And 2017 saw her making news, entering reality shows like Bigg Boss, and even give out three songs out of which ‘Selfie Maine Le Li Aaj’ continues to be lauded for being so bad, that it’s so good. Around 31 million views in a little over six months and there’s still no stopping her. Move over, Salman Khan’s Selfie Le Le Re. We have Pooja here telling us about the uber cool selfies she’s taken.

Taimur Ali Khan

There are not enough words to describe how adorable baby Taimur Ali Khan is. And that’s actually good because pictures speak a thousand words. In his case, it’s a treasure trove of pictures of this cuddly, green-eyed baby. From the outrage over his name (people started equating his name to that of the barbaric Mongol conqueror) to his photos dominating our Instagram and Twitter feed, Taimur is India’s royal baby, just like what baby George is to the people of UK.

Kangana Ranaut Stirring Up The Nepotism Debate & More

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has had quite an eventful year, although not so much in the films department. Two of her releases this year – Rangoon and Simran – failed to do well. However, her year has been a see-saw of sorts, what with her being lauded (and trolled) for stirring up the nepotism debate, and then shifting on to her battle of credits with writer Apurva Asrani, and the worst of all – her public spat with Hrithik Roshan that didn’t seem to die down, and even had Arnab Goswami devoting a whole prime-time show to discuss who is in the wrong here.

But hey, at least we had some fun memes that came out of it. And there was all the fantastic video with AIB that spoke of the double standards and rampant sexism in the film industry.

Priyanka Chopra And Her Met Gala Outfit

Priyanka Chopra attended the classy Met Gala this year in an equally classy trench coat-gown designed by  Ralph Lauren. But not everybody understands fashion, and needless to say, her outfit inspired several meme makers and photoshop enthusiasts to make the best of the situation.

Pahlaj Nihalani

Pahlaj Nihalani, the former CBFC chief, who was adjudged probably the worst censor board chief India ever had, had a lot of strange things to say this year. From refusing to certify Lipstick Under My Burkha because it’s too ‘lady oriented’ to objecting the word ‘intercourse’ in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab Harry Met Sejal‘s trailer, the man has had a funny year prompting social media users to make parody videos and jokes of him. Shah Rukh Khan, too, couldn’t help himself.

You just got Sanskaar’d

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

This year, the answer to life, the universe, and everything was finally out. In April this year, everybody finally got to know why Kattappa killed Baahubali. And boy, did people celebrate it! Not only was Baahubali one of the most trending hashtags in India on Twitter this year, the biggest query on Google in India was something along similar lines.

And this was celebrated, in memes of course.

The Mumbai Police, too, couldn’t help themselves.

And this, by Put Chutney and Temple Monkeys:

Mumbai Police

Who would’ve thought that Indian police personnel would be so updated on pop culture on social media? Sassy, witty, and great with puns, this year Mumbai Police’s Twitter handle wins the internet. Keeping up with the times, and admittedly a huge Game of Thrones and Stranger Things fan, the Mumbai Police’s meme game is so strong.

And one can’t forget the day they called out Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan for promoting bad road sense on social media.

Jimikki Kammal

Velipaadinte Pusthakam, starring Mohanlal, isn’t the best Malayalam film out there. In fact, subjected to mixed reviews, most cinema-goers attest that this film isn’t Lalettan or director Lal Jose’s best ever.

But the film’s song ‘Jimmiki Kammal‘ is a different story altogether. Joining the leagues of several other films who were actually saved by their songs, Velipaadinte Pusthakam is also officially on the map thanks to America’s Late Night Show host Jimmy Kimmel tweeting about it.

While the song, composed by Shaan Rahman and sung by Vineeth Sreenivasan, Renjith Unni, is average enough, we mostly owe a young Accounts teacher from the Indian School of Commerce (Kochi) credit for making it go viral. Sheril G Kadavan thought doing a flash mob-like representation of the song would be a perfect exercise to strengthen the bond between students and teachers at the institute. However, she soon became the face of innumerable memes and dubbed “Tamil Nadu boys’ heart stealer” on social media.

Virushka

A portmanteau of their names – Virat and Anushka – Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli surprised everybody when the news of their secret wedding surfaced. Speculations rose that the two would wed in Italy and it would be a grand one with selected guests.

And finally, they confirmed it. And boy did the internet break so hard. Social media users were on cloud nine. Even non-fans of the two were praying for their happiness.

There were some jokes too.

Game Of Thrones

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

The seventh season of Game Of Thrones was aired this year, confirming so many theories especially R+L=J. However, there was one other detail that fans couldn’t wrap their heads around – Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen having sex, especially since he is her nephew.

People had questions, but mostly, reactions.

Other references too made it to the list.
