As July draws to a close, we take a look at the top six events that were trending this month. From strong emotions, to quirky quips, this month’s Twitter and Facebook feed had a lot to say. The highlights:

hema_2465725f1. Hema Malini’s car accident on the road to Jaipur resulted in a tragedy – the death of a four-year old girl. Shocked Twitteratis vented their feelings, especially when it seemed the limelight was on Hema Malini’s injury, and not the death of the young child.

2. Baahubali broke all box-office collection records, and received plaudits from several quarters. After becoming the fastest Indian film to enter the Rs.100 crore club, it’s currently on its way to the Rs 500 crore mark. Meanwhile, actor Prabhas has been hobnobbing with high-profile politicians, from Rajnath Singh to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Perhaps the most common adjective used before Baahubali was ‘mega’. Well, Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma felt even that wasn’t enough.

And while critics constantly compare directors Shankar and SS Rajamouli, this tweet would have left Rajamouli feeling very, very pleased.

3. Actor and politician Vijayakanth has often been the subject of meme humour on Twitter and Facebook. This time, Vijayakanth took the bull by its horns, or should we say, the book by its face.

4. July had more tragedy in store. The death of legendary composer MS Viswanathan was a blow to the country. The film industry came to a standstill when the news broke. Kollywood celebrities flocked to MSV’s residence for a final glimpse of the composer. The end of an era led to sombre moments of grief and appreciation.

5. Rajinikanth’s die-hard fans were over the moon after Pa Ranjith let slip that Rajinikanth’s character in his next movie will be similar to his ‘Kaali’ role in Mullum Malarum.

This of course led to avid fan discussion on their favourite Rajini character.

6. When asked how he should be remembered – as President, Scientist, Writer, or something else, APJ Abdul Kalam said, “as a teacher”. At IIM Shillong, where he fell atop the podium in the lecture hall, he had been engaging students on ‘Creating a Liveable Planet Earth’. Tributes from across the country poured in on social networking sites, with several recounting their experiences of meeting the legend in person.

The sense of epic loss was captured best perhaps by Rajinikanth, who was moved to tweet after nearly four months. The actor also wrote a hand-written letter about the incident.
