Shruti Haasan is one of those rare South Indian actresses hailing from Chennai, with multiple talents up her sleeve. She is gifted with a mesmerising voice, is known for her acting prowess spanning across Kollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood and even Hollywood. As the actress turns 34, here’s a look at six iconic songs she has lent her voice for:

  1. Potri Paadadi Ponne – Thevar Magan, 1992

There are so many reasons to love this song. The history and pride of the Thevars sung by wonderful singers Mano and TKS Kalaivanan, the presence of actors Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal, Gautami and the collage of beautiful moments in the song. If you’re looking out for more, then I could tell you that Shruti has also been a part of this Ilayaraja composition for the chorus, credited to be the first song she rendered. Thevar Magan is a film by director Bharathan.

2. Ram Ram Hey Ram – Hey Ram, 2000

Although we don’t hear her voice right through the song, she managed to make a mark with the little parts performed. Would you believe that she was only 14 when she sang her parts for this sone? Her voice doesn’t sound amateurish at all! She seems to have already blossomed into a professional back then. Hey Ram is a film by Kamal Haasan.

3. Adiye Kolluthe – Vaaranam Aayiram, 2008

A soothing song requires a soothing voice, and in this case, there was no one better suited for this song’s tone and mood than Shruti. A magical song in itself, her passionate voice adds to the effect Harris Jayaraj wanted to create. Vaaranam Aayiram is a film by Gautham Vasudev Menon.

4. Vaanam Ellai – Unnaipol Oruvan, 2009

This was a career defining song for her in a manner of speaking. The collaboration with Blaaze is unforgettable, and the song was a sensation. A perfect mix of melody and pep. Also, I was today years old when I learned that she was the music director of this film. It clearly didn’t resemble anything close to a maiden album. Unnaipol Oruvan is a film by Chakri Toleti.

5. Yellae Lama – 7 Aum Arivu, 2011

The song where she proved that any pitch or level she adopts wouldn’t have the slightest impact on her voice. And about the song, I could call it one with severe mood swings. At one instance it’s got the singers calm and composed and at the next, it’s got them unleashing their energy. 7 Aum Arivu is a film by AR Murugadoss.

6. Kannazhaga – 3, 2012

Shruti is Janani, a school-girl in this song and has her voice blending with her age, something that many composers don’t pay heed to today. It’s soft, childish and filled with love just like her. She perfects the tone effortlessly throughout the song. 3 is a film by Aishwarya Dhanush.

Just in case you’re looking out for some performances of Shruti along with her father ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan, we’ve got you covered.
