In Theatres This Friday: Horror, Humour, And Some Kamarkat

An abandoned house inhabited by an old white ghost, a group of friends, an ouija board… Demonte Colony has all the trappings of a horror film. What’s more, it is rooted in reality. Based on the supposedly haunted ‘Demonte Colony’ in Chennai, the film spins a tale about a group of youngsters determined to find out whether the legend is really true. Arulnithi has been cast in the lead role and sports an all new hairstyle for the film.

Directed by debutant Ajay Gnanamuthu, a former assistant of AR Murugadoss, the film is being distributed by Thenandal Films. Ramesh Thilak has essayed a pivotal role in the movie and calls it an ‘intense’ experience. “The film has a lot of special effects. So sometimes, we had to react to things that were not there. Like for instance, we had to scream aloud standing in front of absolutely nothing. It was interesting, to say the least.”

Keba Jeremiah turns music composer with this project and has roped in Anirudh, Imman and Andrea Jeremiah to sing for the album. Says D Imman, “It was a huge pleasure to be singing for Keba’s debut effort. I’ve worked with him previously and know him to be a vastly original composer. This album is very innovative and new to Tamil cinema. It will make the film feel all the more exciting.”

Demonte Colony has been censored with an U/A certificate. Considering the nature of the film’s story, we’re told that the producers barely considered going for the censors again. As the spokesperson of the film told us, “We are just happy they didn’t give us an ‘A’.”

Vindhai, on the other hand, is largely devoid of horror, intentional or otherwise. Starring ‘Master’ Mahendran and Manisha Ajith, the film has the distinction of being shot mostly inside a police station set. With a huge supporting cast, including the likes of Manobala, MS Bhaskar, ‘Kadhal’ Saravanan, ‘Scissor’ Manohar and Muthukalai, the film is being promoted as a ‘comedy entertainer’. Director Lara is sure of its success with the audience. “Horror films are passe. Right now, it is the time of comedy entertainers. I’ve put together a strong comedy track and I know for sure that it will be seen by all and stand the test of time. I think I have a winner in my hands.”

Kamarkat will have Pasanga Sreeram and Sattai Yuvan in the lead roles. Set in a school, the film is directed by Ramki Ramakrishnan. The boys have made quite the transition from their previous projects. In this movie, Sreeraam and Yuvan get love interests, a break up gaana song and stunt sequences. In that order. Manisha Ajith is in this film as well along with Raksha Raj, last seen in Thoppi.

Director Ramki is of the opinion that Kamarkat will make a mark for itself in tomorrow’s race. “It’s a coming-of-age story, peppered with romance. It is about two hotheaded boys and the way they deal with problems in their life. I’ve interacted with quite a few under-eighteen kids to get an accurate idea of their psyche, so this film won’t look unreal at all.”
