2016-2017: What’s In Store For Malayalam Cinema

With several promising projects in the pipeline in 2016-2017, Malayalam cinema is likely to have another great run this year. Here’s a quick look at what’s in store:

Dulquer Salman, the most recent recipient of the Kerala State Award, has a number of films lined up. His next release will be Samir Thahir’s Kali, where he is paired opposite Premam star Sai Pallavi. The film is a romantic-drama centred around a married couple. Cinematographer-director Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatti Paadam is also fast progressing. After that, he will start working in director Amal Neerad’s movie, and actor Prathap Pothen’s directorial.

Prithviraj also has his hands full. The actor is now busy with Jijo Antony’s Darwinte Parinamam. He will be seen in director Hariharan’s Syamanthakam, Jeethu Joseph’s Oozham, Sujith Vasudev’s James and Alice, RS Vimal’s Karnan, Pradeep M Nair’s Vimanam, and Jamesh Kottakkal’s A Beautiful Game.

Nivin Pauly‘s next is Aviyal, an anthology film presented by Karthik Subbaraj’s Benchtalkies. He will be seen in a short film, directed by Alphonse Putheren. He is also working in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Jacobinte Swarga Rajyam, which is set in Dubai.

Fahadh Fazil has just one movie in 2016 – Anwar Rasheed’s project.

Mohanlal has two Tollywood projects lined up for 2016 – Junior NTR’s Janata Garage and Chandra Sekhar Yeleti’s Manamantha. His film Puli Murugan is also nearing release. He will also be seen in Priyadarshan’s Oppam, which will feature actress Vimala Raman as the female lead.

Mammootty’s next film is White, where he is paired opposite Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi. Kasaba, directed by Nithin Renji Panicker, will feature him as a police officer.

Manju Warrier is part of director Deepu Karunakaran’s upcoming movie Karinkunnam Sixes, in which she portrays a volleyball coach for central jail inmates.

Kunchakko Boban‘s next is debutant Rishi Sivakumar’s Valleem Thetti Pulleem Thetti, which marks actress Shamili’s return to Mollywood. He will also be seen in Rosshan Andrew’s School Bus, alongside Aparna Gopinath and Jayasurya. Additionally, he plans to relaunch his family banner, Udaya Studio, with a film directed by Siddharth Shiva, titled Kochanavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho.

Jayasurya‘s forthcoming films include Pretham, a horror film directed by Ranjith Shankar, and Rosshan Andrew’s School Bus. Reportedly, the actor will also feature in VK Prakash’s Sweetheart.
