A Quick Guide To The Oscars 2018

RedditGoogle+Whatsapp

For cinema buffs in India, the Oscars is an annual affair to wake up early in the morning and watch the awards ceremony live. In this age, and given the goof-up from last year (remember when Warren Beatty announced the wrong movie name?), it’s worth staying up and predicting the next Oscar meme for the year.

Most ardent fans would mostly watch to see if their predictions were right, if the winning actor really deserved it. And most of all, was the winner of the Best Movie really worth the hype?

In this guide, especially for all those fans who are watching the Oscars live from India, we attempt to answer the much-needed Whos-Whats-Wheres-Hows of Oscars 2018.

March 5, 2018, 6.30 AM, Indian Standard Time. But if you are interested in the red carpet looks, then make sure you wake up by 5.30 AM.

March 4, 2018, 5.00 PM, Pacific Time Zone.

Which channels will air the ceremony?

It will be telecast live on Star Movies, 5.30 AM onwards. The repeat telecast will happen on the same day at 8.30 PM. It will also be streamed online on Hotstar.

Where?

The 90th Academy Awards is taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Who’s hosting?

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will host for the second consecutive year.

Any themes this year?

Last year, many celebrities wore red and blue ribbons to show their support towards ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). By wearing the pin, the celebrities were showing their support for the rights and civil liberties guaranteed by the Constitution to everyone in the United States.

This year, however, considering the two main campaigns started to stop sexual harassment and assaults – #MeToo and #TimesUp – celebrities have been actively participating by wearing black to award functions. While there is no official theme, several stars are slated to wear black gowns and suits to keep up with the activism.

Who all will be specially honoured this year?

French film director Agnès Varda, American director and writer Charles Burnett, Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, American cinematographer Owen Roizman.

Alejandro G Iñárritu will receive a special achievement award for his virtual reality project Carne y Arena.
