Premgi Amaren debuts as a hero and composer with Maanga. So, we expected him to be clad in fancy clothes at the film’s audio launch.

But, no.

He was seen in his usual Superman T-shirt.

We could also see that he had run from pillar to post, to make sure that the event went well. His family – Gangai Amaren, Venkat Prabhu, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Bhavatharini – were present, and his friends, commonly known as ‘the Chennai 28 group’, were heard cheering for their brother.

Some of them, though, had things to confess.

Highlights:

1. Venkat Prabhu revealed that Premgi Amaren had always wanted to become a music director. “Yuvan is his guru. Whenever I make movies, I ask Premgi if he wants to act or make music. For some reason, he didn’t want to compose music for my films. But, except for Mankaatha, Premgi has been the hero of my movies. And, there is a deal; if Premgi acts in my films, he wouldn’t compose for it. We don’t breach it.”

He signed off with a joke. “The producer of Maanga has risked his money by making Premgi a hero!”

2. Premgi Amaren confessed that a lot of heroines were approached to act opposite him in Maanga. “‘Premgi hero-va? Chi!’ sollitu poitaanga. However, Leema and Advaitha agreed. I am thankful to them,” said Premgi. The actor added that it his dream to release Maanga on Ajith’s birthday (May 1).

3. Gangai Amaren’s delivered an emotional speech by recalling the time, when Venkat Prabhu did odd jobs in London, to fund Premgi’s education. “Kashta kaalam adhu! Ilaiyaraaja enakku paatu kodukkama okkara vechcha neram… Venkat Prabhu and Premgi must not be like Ilaiyaraaja and Gangai Amaren. Annan-thambi anbu thaana deiveegamaa varanum…” Of all the confessions, the most interesting one was this: Gangai Amaren said that he harbours a dream. “Prabhu should make a movie, and Prem must play the lead. Deepika Padukone must also be roped in. I want to go to the sets, and take photos with all of them.”

We also learnt that a ‘new variety of mango’ has been named ‘Premgi Maanga’. “My friends in Salem have planted a new type. It makes me proud that it’s named after Premgi.”

The audio was later launched by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Pictures from the event here.
